Let’s read together!
Reading is a skill. In order to read quickly and fluently, we must first make a little effort.
It seems that children once found it easier to get into a book. Today they have many interactive, and thus perhaps more interesting devices, such as smartphones, tablets and computers, which distract them from reading.
Tereza Žerdin, who wrote the book The Unfortunate – stories for children who do not like to read, says that in the past, too, some children ate book up, while others were not attracted to them.
But it seems that today the first group is getting smaller and the second bigger.
Therefore different campaigns encourage reading. Two years ago there was Slovenia Read, and now The National Month of Group Reading has now started.
This should help raise the reading culture and literacy among Slovenes.
»In little Slovenia, many institutions and individuals are engaged in encouraging reading. This year, after many years of efforts, we are connecting these in a network for the first time, and in such a large number,« says Savina Zwitter, president of the Reading Society of Slovenia.
An important part of The Month of Group Reading is a website where institutions promoting reading culture can present their activities, programs or projects. All those who are interested in reading are able to see what is available there. They can search for activities using different criteria, such as by type, place and date.
»It is important for us all to gather information from the field of reading culture in one place,« adds Petra Potočnik of the Slovenian Reading Badge Society – ZPMS.
