Janja Garnbret, a sports woman who climbed to the top

At the start of the school year, children choose the activities that they will be part of all year.

Some choose sports. Usually because they enjoy them. They are a little young to reach the top with their results.

As a girl, Janja Garnbret decided to do climbing because she enjoyed going on the rock walls.

She spent a lot of time training when she was growing up. »But I’ve always found some time for my friends,« says the a 19-year-old.

In the sport she likes, she has climbed to the very top.

Two years ago she won the gold medal in the category of lead climbing at the World Championship.

This weekend she became the world champion for bouldering, and the Olympic combination event, and was second best in lead climbing.

Yes, at the last World Climbing Championship she won two gold and one silver medal! What no other climbers in the world have ever done!

»I’m really happy, it was my dream,« said Janja.

This year was hard for her. As she was in her final year in school, she missed several climbing events. She also suffered damage to her shoulder.

But she did not give in. She finished her schooling, and then in the sporting events she proved that with hard work and perseverance she could really climb to the top.

She advises young athletes to never give up. »Of course you have to train and enjoy it,« she says.

At the Gymnasium Velenje, which she visited, her classmates and school friends felt so proud that they put a big poster of her on the wall of the hall with the inscription »World champion Janja, we are proud of you!«

Points to Consider

  1. Do you want to be successful?
  2. How many hours a day you are willing to train?
  3. Do you think that success would change you?
