The World Expo is in the “Land of the Rising Sun”

Countries of the world are once again coming together for a great exhibition – Expo 2025 has opened its doors!

Every five years, countries present their achievements, innovations, and culture at the Expo.

This time it is hosted by Osaka, Japan’s third-largest city.

On display for the first time is a meteorite from Mars, which was found by researchers in Antarctica.

The organizers have also prepared the longest sushi conveyor belt – measuring 135 meters.

Creating a Future Society for Our Lives is the theme, and the mascot is an unusual red and blue creature drawn by a children’s illustrator based on a public competition.

The mascot’s red represents cells and blue represents water.

More than 160 countries, including Slovenia, are participating.

And what will be presented?

This Expo Slovenia does not have its own pavilion. The money for it was redirected to relief funds after the floods in August 2023.

So Slovenia has joined forces with Croatia, Montenegro, Slovakia, Ukraine, San Marino, Israel, Panama, Guatemala, Uruguay, and Gabon to present under one roof.

Slovenia chose the slogan From Heart to Heart because humans are not just users of technology, but also beings with reasoning, feelings, and values.

The exhibition space focuses on displaying Slovenia’s attractions.

Slovenia’s exhibition gives visitors the opportunity to take a virtual cycling tour of the country, where they can see everything from Slovenia’s beekeeping to technology.

There has been a lot of talk in the last year about Serbia also hosting the Expo.

In fact, there will be a smaller version of it – a special exhibition in 2027.

Glossary

Sushi is a Japanese dish made from rice, seaweed, raw fish, or vegetables with spices.

A pavilion is a ground-floor building made of lightweight material, intended primarily for exhibitions.

Points to Consider

  1. What do you think your country should present at an Expo?
  2. Where was the last Expo? … and what happened to the Slovenian pavilion?
  3. What do you know about Japanese culture?
