The day for all pranksters!

Are you ready for a prank?

April 1st is April Fools’ Day – the unofficial, international holiday of pranks.

It’s a day when you can play a joke on your friends or trick them with a little prank without worrying or getting into such trouble as you would otherwise.

Well, it depends on the joke.

On April 1st the media also likes to play jokes on readers and viewers!

Or at least they have in the past.

Fake news appears on the Internet and in some media all year round and can be harmful. The media, which relies a lot on trust, began avoiding April Fools’ jokes.

April 2nd, which is international fact-checking day, reminds you to recognize fake news.

In Slovenia, the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) checks the facts. With their NE/JA project, STA strives to dispel myths.

Jokes in the media have a long tradition.

The first April Fools’ joke on television was completely harmless, but a lot of people believed it.

In 1957 the BBC broadcasted a three-minute clip about the spaghetti harvest in southern Switzerland.

Hundreds of viewers questioned the creators of the video about the veracity of the story.

Some even wondered how to grow their own “spaghetti” trees.

America’s CNN later called the show “the biggest hoax ever pulled by any reputable journalistic establishment.”

April Fools’ jokes, though, can have more serious consequences.

Last April an employee of a low-cost Thai airline, VietJet Air, made an innocent joke about the King of Thailand and narrowly avoided a prison sentence.

April Fools’ Day is a cute tradition, and it’s okay to play a little joke on your friends or parents on April 1st.

Just make sure that the jokes are not offensive or even dangerous.

The most important thing is that, in the end, all of you get a good laugh out of the joke!

Points to Consider

  1. Do you like pranks?
  2. Have you played any pranks on anyone?
  3. What kind of jokes can be dangerous?
