We can be inspired by many people.
These can be Kids of the Year (face), musicians, scientists, or entrepreneurs — but for many they are athletes. We cheer for them all year long and follow their ups and downs.
Athletes train all their lives to achieve the best results in competitions. Despite its modest size, Slovenia has a large number of sports stars who have been recognized several times this year.
This year the special honor went to the ski jumper, Urša Bogataj, and the athlete, Kristjan Čeh.
In the men’s awards, Čeh overtook the cycling star, Tadej Pogačar, and the alpine skier, Žan Kranjec. He reached this title with 19 victories in the season. He set the Slovenian national discus record and became the world champion in the “queen of sports.”
I keep hearing that I’m superman. This nickname is my favorite.
Kristjan Čeh, Athlete of the Year
Bogotaj earned her title thanks to two gold medals at the Beijing Olympics.
And which team convinced sports journalists this time?
Urša Bogataj, who was a member of the mixed jumping team at the Olympic Games, celebrated in the team selection as well. Peter Prevc, Timi Zajc, and Nika Križnar jumped with her, and they won the gold together.
Nika won third place for the sportswoman of the year, and Janja Garnbret, last year’s winner, came second.
Third place was a really great result, and it gave me the momentum to continue the season, which was also very successful.
Pia Babnik, a promising young sports personality
The most promising athlete of the year is the golfer, Pia Babnik. The eighteen-year-old took third place at the Chevron Championship.
For reflection
- Which sports do you follow?
- Who is your favorite athlete or sports team?
- Which is the “queen of sports?”
