We need to know how to communicate tolerantly – even online.
This is highlighted a recently published book, Compassionate Language Among Youth (Sočutni jezik med mladimi), published by Slovenia’s Office for Youth and edited by psychologist Mitja Černko.
Why is this important for children?
Recent challenges are being faced daily in climate, economy, energy, and social cohesion.
One of these challenges is the tension built between youth and adults – deepening differences and escalating conflicts. Especially if different things are important to them.
In the book we explore the origins of these tensions and present ways in which we can begin to calm and resolve them.
Do teens often encounter hate speech?
Research suggests that various forms of hatred are escalating. At the same time, people often experience the situation as normal since they grow up in it and don’t know anything else – especially on the internet.
This doesn’t only include teasing, arguments, and insults, which have always been a part of life and which we must learn to deal with.
The most concerning are behaviors that put down, exclude, or call for attacks on people based on who they are.
Freedom of speech and the right to criticise behaviors we disagree with are essential. Forms of hatred that are based on distorted perceptions of different groups, without a willingness to get to know them (closer), are questionable.
It is the beginning of a process that can lead to wider group hatred and violence. And this is difficult to stop.

What role does school play in promoting compassionate communication?
School is a community in which young people learn about the world, develop skills, shape their character, and build relationships.
The school environment is co-created by all members, but the greatest influence and responsibility belongs to the school management and employees.
The manual describes many methods that can strengthen knowledge, skills, and mindsets to promote compassion and connection.
