You probably know what a citizen is.
A citizen is a member of a certain country.
Who is a digital citizen? And what is digital citizenship?
It is a concept that includes content about the responsible, safe, and ethical use of digital technologies, explains Petra Bevek of the Slovene Ministry of Education.
It means active participation in the online environment as we create, share content, socialize, communicate, and learn.
Petra Bevek
This includes respecting others, protecting your privacy, and thinking critically about information you find online.
There are three main points in digital citizenship education:
- Rights online: knowing our rights and responsibilities in the digital world and protecting our privacy.
- Being online: using digital technology to create, communicate, and collaborate in a relevant way.
- Online Wellbeing: Taking care of our health and safety while using technologies and developing a healthy attitude towards them.
While adults separate the digital and physical worlds, young people perceive them as one because it has been the only world they have known and lived in.
Petra Bevek
Digital citizenship education is, therefore, extremely important for children and adolescents.
It enables them to develop skills and values that will enable them to effectively collaborate in the digital space in the future
This year has been declared the European Year of Digital Citizenship Education by the Council of Europe. The goal is to highlight the importance of education in this area.
In Slovenia the DIGI.DR project was created, and Časoris also participates in it!
DIGI.DR focuses on strengthening digital competences, media education, and digital citizenship in kindergartens and schools.
The digital environment is here to stay, so we should become as familiar with it as possible.
Points to Consider
- What are your digital skills?
- Why is respectful behavior online important?
- Can you recognize online scams?
