Every day we hear about the accumulation of packaging in the environment. Plants and animals as well as people suffer because of it.
We can raise awareness about its harmful effects, says associate professor dr. Urška Vrabič Brodnjak from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Ljubljana.
What kind of packaging is organic?
Ecological packaging is made from sustainable or renewable materials.
The packaging can be recycled or decomposed in an environmentally friendly way.
In addition to the material cycle, environmentally-friendly adhesives, printing inks, and coatings are taken into account.
Also, the shape and design of the packaging should be planned so that as little as possible material is used with minimal printed surface.
Examples of eco-friendly packaging include packaging made from paper, cardboard, glass, metals – usually aluminum – and bio-based, biodegradable or compostable plastics. This plastic is also called bioplastic.
Is ecological packaging available in Slovenia?
It is available here. Slovenes use a lot of paper, glass, and metal packaging.
Slovenes have the option to use shopping and produce bags made from biodegradable or compostable packaging.
Even certain packaging for food and cosmetics is partly or entirely made from bioplastics.
How can we encourage people to use less non-ecological packaging?
There are several ways to make people aware of the impact of packaging on the environment.
We can support sustainable brands that use less packaging and more environmentally-friendly materials.
By separating waste, recycling, and composting at home, consumers can contribute to the reuse of materials and the reduction of waste.
Glossary
A material cycle is a method where the waste of one process represents the raw material for another. This prevents pollution and effectively conserves resources.
Composting is an easy way to turn waste into useable material.
Points to Consider
- How often do you use disposable packaging?
- Can you think of other ways to use less non-ecological packaging?
- Do you think your country is environmentally aware enough?
